Adapting Your Communication Style Part Two

Adapting Your Communication Style Part Two In a previous post, I discussed how understanding your own communication style and decision process helps you to be part of a successful team.   Even more important than self awareness, though, is your ability to adapt to the other team members’ styles when communicating with them. If you’re a big-picture, inspirational leader, you may rely heavily on your charisma and persuasive skills to win over skeptics.   That’s fine, until you encounter a data-driven analytical type who cares more about whether you’ve done your homework than how fine your words are. If you run into a relationship based people person, she’ll personify the adage: “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” You’ll be expected to spend time making a personal connection before you get down to business.     Without that small talk to ease into the meeting, your cause will not stand a chance. Why is it your responsibility to adapt, and not theirs?   You only have to change your style if you want to succeed.     In every office, you can find examples of people talking over and around each other without managing to break through the wall that separates them on issues.   Stephen Covey of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, spends a lot of time on the concept of “seeking to understand first, then seeking to be understood.” Covey says that you must understand what’s important to another person before you can truly connect with him.   What seems like a gesture of respect and kindness to you, whether it’s performing a difficult task as a favor or calling friends when they seem a little down, may not have the same effect on them that it has for you.   A results-driven co-worker may think that offering to help with a project is a gesture of friendly support; the recipient of the gesture may see it as a sign that she is not respected as a professional.   A relationship -driven personality may think that stopping by to ask how you’re feeling is an act of kindness; the data-driven perfectionist sees it as a sign that he’s weak and not controlling his feelings well at the office. It’s usually easy to recognize personality types; the trick is in learning to appreciate and respect them.   When you roll your eyes every time your team member brings out his extensive research, or cut short your coworker when she asks about your weekend, you are building walls that make communication on important issues much harder than it has to be.   “Seeking first to understand” means, in part, crafting your message in a way that helps your team members hear it and be willing to cooperate with you.   Why not make it one of your New Year’s resolutions?

Beware of the girl ghetto at work

Beware of the girl ghetto at work Why are almost all the bloggers in the Life at Work section at BNET women? Im worried, because its never good for ones career to be in a room full of women unless youre a model or a stripper. Because where there are women there are lower salaries. This  is not a case of discrimination. I mean, its not that men get paid more for the same work that women do.  Its that women choose to do different work. I interviewed Al Lee, the quantitative analysis genius who combs through salaries at  PayScale,  and among  the fascinating things he told me  was that women and men get paid similar amounts for similar work but that women pick lower-paying fields, and lower paying paths. So, for instance, neurosurgeons are men and family practice doctors are women. And social workers are women and psychiatrists are men. Al says that the best thing women can do to increase their earning power is to choose fields dominated by men right out of college. I have actually been given this advice often in my career. For example, mentors told me to  stay in line for management positions  where I would be responsible for profit and loss for the company (product manager, for example) rather than go into support roles where I help people become stars in profit and loss but get no direct credit myself (human resources, for example). So I went into tech.  All men. And I started doing venture-backed startups.  All men. And when I have been in departments that were all women, I either quit or switched to another department. Really. I am not stupid. But all that careful work throughout my career and now Im writing with all women. I am sure this is not good. I went over the BNET to investigate the situation and I stumbled on Kimberly Weisuls piece titled,Why Mentoring Helps Men More than Women. I clicked, mostly because I am always worried about not having the right mentors. It turns out, I probably dont have the right mentors, because women connect with people lower on the food chain than men do. I panic. I need to connect with business writers who are not writing work life stuff. No. Wait. I need to connect with Eric Schurenberg, who is editor-in-chief of BNET. I need to go out to lunch with him and make him love me, and then hell think of me first when he creates the power-writers group that lives on the home page of BNET and pops up in everyones browser with the urgency of a subscribe-now button on a porn site. The thing is that Kimberly concludes in her post that women are getting ripped off. It kills me. I dont want to be writing next to women who believe that women are getting a raw deal and then complain about it. I dont buy it. As I said,  there is not a salary gap between women and men. There is  a competition gap between women and men. Women choose collaborative, feel-good jobs, like writing in the how-can-we-all-get-along-better section of BNET and  men  choose the competitive, dog-eat-dog jobs like managing all the feel-good writers on BNET. That link is to Paul Sloan. My editor. Will he even let me run this piece? I dont know. You know what? I cant stop writing about him. I have a little crush on him even though he wont answer his phone when I call and he always returns my calls at 6pm central when he knows I wont pick up the phone because Im having dinner with my family. Women: It is very bad to write stuff about dinner with family if you are trying to get ahead. Do not do this. People assume that  if you have kids you will do less work. This may or may not be true I mean, doing less work. But what is true is that you should not talk about family at work if you want to be in the all-boys departments. However it is okay to talk about crushes at work because it is more of a single person thing to do. I mean, everyone has crushes, but only single people talk about it. So I think it makes me have a better chance of getting out of the girl ghetto at BNET if I tell you that Paul is a little shorter than I am, and not as good-looking as I am, but still, he is fun and cute.

Reach Out Now you need to get noticed.   You can and either secure work as a self-employed photographer or employment with a photography agency. If you go the freelance route, keep in mind that you will need to register as a sole trader and manage the business side of the operation. You can find work as a photographer by sending speculative applications to businesses, browsing online job boards, and by asking around. It can be hard to get your foot in the door initially.     Once you gain some experience, develop a network, and start to develop a reputation, it can be much easier. Continue To Develop The great and most successful photographers will continue to develop their abilities.   They can then stand out from the crowd and secure more work. Fortunately, this is easier than ever as you can research and even take courses online to further your knowledge. If you have a love for photography, then you might want to think about turning it into a career. Although it can be competitive, there is always a demand for great photographs in all different industries. Especially in an internet-driven age. Shopping For Interview and Career Outfits

Shopping For Interview and Career Outfits This week in my series on career dressing, I talked with Ilona Vanderwoude of Career Branches about tips for helping men find the right interview and career outfits. Ilona recommends investment dressing; having a few high quality pieces in your wardrobe, but cautions that price is often not a good indicator of quality. She suggests that men have at least one suit, three white shirts, three ties, one pair of black shoes, one watch, and a portfolio to start and build their wardrobe from there. Here are some things to keep in mind when you shop.Bring a white dress shirt, dress socks, and the shoes you will be wearing with your suit to the store.Realize that clothing sizes are arbitrary. Sizes on tags mean little since the actual sizes vary immensely between designers and different clothing lines.Dont expect everything you buy, even if it is the right size, to fit you like a glove. Buying off the rack means you will probably have to have a few things altered to ensure the best fit.Look f or width before length. If you are going to have to alter your clothing, it is almost always easier to shorten than it is to change the width. The part that matters in your pants is the waist and hips, since this is the area that people with be noticing and it also is important to feeling comfortable. For shirts and jackets, the shoulders and chest are the important parts.Dont be blind-sided by a specific designer, unless this designers clothes fit you very well and the items are within your budget. Different designers have different fits. A suit is not just a suit. Some are wider in the shoulders across the entire collection, so always judge a suit for how it actually looks on you. When trying items on, check yourself out front and back, preferably in a 3-way mirror. And move around in it. Sit in it. Does it bulge in the back?In addition, Ilona recommends going to an upscale department store to try on a few high-end suits so you know what true quality looks and feels like. Then, arm ed with this information, shop for quality rather than name-brand suits at the less expensive racks. Look specifically for the quality of the fabric, the workmanship, and the cut. If you can only purchase one suit, go for a medium weight wool navy suit.Still confused? Consider hiring an image consultant in your area to go shopping with you. Or contact Ilona at image@careerbranches.com for information about her upcoming teleseminar on career dressing.
